Publishing Assistance

Friendly, expert publishing assistance

Through the Wool Street Publishing (WSP) arm of our business, we can provide you with turnkey publishing services right through to published books in your hands (and/or e-books on your tablets). We’ll tell you what you need to know, so you don’t have to spend your valuable time learning about the complex writing and publishing process. With our help, you’ll save time, minimize costs, and avoid costly mistakes.

Early on, we’ll explain the advantages of self-publishing vs. traditional publishing and help you choose the best option for your project. For background information on this important decision, read our white paper “Publishing Options: How to Choose the Best Method for Publishing Your Book.”

  • If you decide to go the traditional publishing route, we can write your book proposal and help you find an agent.
  • If you choose the self-publishing option(also called independent-publishing), we can provide the comprehensive services are outlined below.

Menu of Self-Publishing Services

Assistance in setting up your own publishing company

Wool Street Publishing (WSP) will gladly publish your book if you wish, but we usually recommend establishing your own  publishing company. (Don’t worry! This is actually a simple process.) As your own publisher, you will retain all rights to your book, maintain total control, and keep more of the income from sales. The fees and other out-of-pocket expenses required to set up your publishing company are typically nominal.

Coordination of interior layout

WSP will secure quotes from reliable book designers and coordinate the interior layout of the book with your input and approval. The designer will invoice you directly, without any markup for WSP’s services. Interior layout costs range between $800 and $2,500. Usually the same designer handles both the interior and the cover.

Coordination of custom cover design

WSP will arrange for the design of your book’s cover, subject to your input and approval. The designer will invoice you directly, without any markup for WSP’s coordination services. Custom cover designs typically cost between $800 and $2,500.

Coordination of indexing

If desired, WSP will arrange for the indexing of your book. This may be important if it is a non-fiction book that may be used as a reference. The cost generally ranges from $500 to $1,500.

Coordination of printing

WSP will secure quotes from professional printers and help you chose the most suitable printer for your book.  The vendor will invoice you directly, without any markup added for WSP’s coordination services. Because you will have a direct relationship with the printer, you will be able to order additional copies of your book at any time at the printer’s price. Per-copy prices decrease as print quantities increase.

Printing 300 copies of a soft-cover book of 150 pages typically costs less than $900 ($3.00 per book); printing of 500 copies costs about $1,000 ($2.00 per book); and printing 5,000 copies costs about $7,500 ($1.50 per book). Very small quantities can be printed rather economically using print-on-demand (POD) services. Hardcover books typically cost between $3 and $8 per copy, depending on quantity.

Acquisition of ISBN and bar code

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is required for each edition of your book (i.e., hardcover, soft cover, e-book, audio book, and subsequent new editions). WSP will obtain ISBNs for the book and invoice you for the cost (approximately $275 for a block of 10).

Registration of copyright

Your book is automatically copyrighted as soon as it is written, but registering it with the U.S. Copyright Office provides an additional level of protection. If desired, WSP will handle this for you. A modest fee is required.

Listing with Bowker's "Books in Print"

WSP will arrange for your book to be listed with Bowker’s “Books in Print,” which is a key reference for bookstore buyers and other members of the publishing community.

Filing with Library of Congress

If your book will be sold to libraries, WSP will obtain a Pre-assigned Control Number (PCN) from the Library of Congress.

Coordination of distribution

If desired, WSP will help you arrange distribution for your book to to,, retail book stores, or other appropriate outlets. You will pay applicable fees directly to the vendors, without any markup from WSP.

Publication in electronic format

WSP will help you arrange for electronic publication of your book, if desired. The cost is usually about $500, which you will pay directly to the vendor without any markup from WSP.

Coordination of professional proofreading

To help ensure that your book is free from grammatical errors, WSP will arrange for one or more professional proofreaders to review it prior to layout, and again before it goes to press. WSP will invoice you for the cost, which generally ranges between $300 and $800 per review.

Coordination of marketing assistance

If desired, WSP will introduce you to professionals who can assist you with marketing strategy, book promotion, website development, and other aspects of marketing. You will be responsible for all fees, which can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. These consultants will bill you directly, without any markup from WSP.
